On Friday, September 19, 2008 the Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity hosted its 5th annual Welcome Daze. The OMA&D offers Welcome Daze to incoming students and families in conjunction with the University of Washington’s Dawg Daze as a way to inform them of campus resources and to connect them with other incoming freshmen and transfer students. The event was held at the HUB and it included a welcome by President Mark A. Emmert, Provost Phyllis M. Wise and Vice President/Vice Provost Sheila Edwards Lange. Student speakers included ASUW President Anttimo Bennett and Student Advisory Board Co-Chairs Vanessa Vassall & Sabrina Fields.

The event featured a UW resource fair for the new students and their families. Representatives from OMA&D programs, UW departments, UW services, and student organizations were available to answer questions and give out information. Students also participated in a pinning ceremony to mark the beginning of their educational journey.

On Saturday September 14, 2008, University of Washington representatives from the Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity, showed their school pride at the annual Seattle Fiestas Patrias Parade.

Las Fiestas Patrias or “Patriotic Holidays” is the celebration of independence of Latin American countries from colonial rule. This celebration is very similar to the Fourth of July celebration for the US. This multi-country independence celebration is commemorated with food, dance, music, and parades, such as the one in South Park.
