Urrea Lecture and Reception

The Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity (OMA&D) hosted an evening with Luis Alberto Urrea, author of the University of Washington common book, The Devil’s Highway on Thursday, October 23, 2008. The evening consisted of an informal discussion, in which student’s questions were answered, followed by an autograph session, and a reception.

Born in Tijuana, Mexico, Urrea is a prolific and acclaimed writer who uses his dual-culture life experiences to explore greater themes of love, loss and triumph. The Devil’s Highway takes us on a journey very few people know about, and fewer attempt. “–we follow 26 men who in May 2001 attempted to cross the Mexican border into the desert of southern Arizona, through the deadly region known as the Devil’s Highway, a desert so harsh and desolate that even the Border Patrol is afraid to travel through it. Only 12 of the men made it out.”

Luis Alberto Urrea is a critically acclaimed author of 11 books and has won multiple awards, including a Lannan Literary Award and was a finalist for the Pulitzer prize and the Pacific Rim Kiriyama Prize for The Devil’s Highway
