The University of Washington President’s Minority Community Advisory Committee (MCAC) honored and bid farewell to outgoing President Mark Emmert at its Sept. 21 meeting in the Regent’s Room in Gerberding Hall. Committee members offered words of praise and well wishes to Emmert, who is departing UW on Oct. 1 to become the president of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). MCAC chair Larry Gossett presented Emmert with a framed certificate of appreciation. Read more

The University of Washington Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity (OMA&D) was recently awarded a pair of grants from the U.S. Department of Education to support low-income and first-generation college students, Vice President for Minority Affairs and Vice Provost for Diversity Sheila Edwards Lange announced Tuesday. Jamie Smith of Sacajawea Middle School and the Spokane MESA Center was the recipient of the 2010 Mona Bailey Teacher Leadership Award. The award, sponsored by Washington MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement), was presented to Smith by Bailey at the MESA Board of Directors Luncheon on Sat., Sept. 11, at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratories in Richland, Wash.
