The Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity is currently soliciting applications for the 2010 Samuel E. Kelly Distinguished Faculty Lecture Series.  All University of Washington faculty members are eligible for nomination.  The lecture is scheduled for Wednesday, April 21, 2010 and carries an honorarium of $1500.

Named in the honor of the late Dr. Kelly, this annual lecture recognizes his vision of equity in society and contributes to our knowledge of diversity and its dimensions: race, ethnicity, class, gender, religion, sexual orientation, nation and nationhood, disability, and age.  Dr. Kelly who founded the Office of Minority Affairs in 1970 and served as its first Vice President, created a vision of how the University could and should meet its obligation to students regardless of color or economic status.  He spearheaded new models of admissions, counseling, and academic support that have been emulated across the nations.

Nomination Criteria
In choosing the UW faculty member to deliver the 2010 Samuel E. Kelly Distinguished Faculty Lecture, the selection committee will look for evidence in three aspects in their research:

  • Nominee’s research contributes substantially to new knowledge about diversity and social justice locally, nationally or internationally
  • Nominee’s research alters the way we think about diversity or the way fields or disciplines approach diversity
  • Nominee’s research encourages dialogue, promotes reflection, and inspires action.
