Save the date for the Samuel E. Kelly Distinguished Faculty Lecture, Wednesday, April 21, 2010.

The Samuel E. Kelly Distinguished Faculty Lecture honors Dr. Kelly's vision of equity in society and contributes to our knowledge of diversity and its dimensions: race, ethnicity, class, gender, religion, sexual orientation, nation and nationhood, disability, and age. Dr. Kelly, who founded the Office of Minority Affairs in 1970 and served as its first Vice President, created a vision of how the University could and should meet its obligation to students regardless of color or economic status. He spearheaded new models of admissions, counseling, and academic support that have been emulated across the nations.

Plans

Considering our reduced budget for the next biennium we anticipate a sharp drop in our ability to support community events and organizations that OMAD is not directly involved with. While this is unfortunate, due to the challenge of getting these same community organizations to give back to our programs and students this might be an opportunity to frame our inability to give as a reminder of the reciprocity that we would like to see from them.

We do intend to continue our efforts to create Alumni Affinity groups. Currently we plan to structure this as a multicultural Alumni Advisory Board or a Diversity Alumni Board with community liaisons. We also plan to continue our outreach to alumni by hosting “the Weekend” an alumni focused collection of events on homecoming weekend as well as other quarterly events geared towards alumni. Our ultimate goal for is to bring these alumni back to campus to attend grad school, mentor our current students, take up leadership roles, and encourage giving.

For our publications currently we collaborate with UWAA on the E-Newsletter but are open to exploring other options because of branding and timing issues. We also will be working to bring all OMAD programs and unit websites into compliance with UW web standards of design and navigation while also managing the transition of the Diversity and departmental site during a redesign of the main UW website. We have already begun this effort with Talent Search.
