Ethnic Cultural Center/Theatre and Instructional Center Expansion/Renovation Project

In October 2007, the Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity (OMA&D) and the UW Capital Projects Office began a study of the buildings housing two OMA&D programs, the Ethnic Cultural Center/Theatre (ECC/T) and the Instructional Center (IC). The study will help determine the best way of addressing the future space and program needs of the units and make a recommendation on the feasibility of renovating and/or expanding the current facilities. The feasibility study is projected to last until June 2008.

Facilities for the 21st Century

Recent inquiries into the space issues of the Ethnic Cultural Center/Theatre have shown that it needs more meeting rooms and space for student programs. The Instructional Center needs more classroom space. Expansion and/or renovation is necessary for the two programs to continue to offer excellent services and accommodate all the groups that want to use the facilities well into the twenty-first century.

About the ECC/T and the IC

The Ethnic Cultural Center/Theatre and the Instructional Center are national models and central to the mission and programming of the UW Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity. Both programs trace their origins back to the 1968 student movement for increased minority admissions and support at the UW. Both are frequently cited by students and alumni as key to their success, growth, and well-being at the university. These programs occupy the same buildings that they did forty years ago, with some modifications.
