“1918” Performance Invitation!

The UW Polynesian Student Alliance cordially invites you to attend a one-of-a-kind performance, “1918” by New Zealand performing dance group, Le Moana, on Saturday, July 14th at 7:00PM at the Samuel E. Kelly Ethnic Cultural Theater. 1918″ is a response to the devastating Spanish influenza pandemic of 1918 that swept across the globe but had its worst effects in the then New Zealand colony of Western Sāmoa. This devastating disease travelled from New Zealand to Sāmoa on the passenger and cargo ship, SS Talune, claiming the lives of almost a third of the population. This dreadful period in Sāmoa’s history became a catalyst for resistance against the New Zealand colonial government which eventually led to Sāmoa’s independence. 2018 marks the 100 year anniversary since this tragic and pivotal event. 1918 is unique in that it weaves heritage siva Sāmoa, text and contemporary dance together as the medium for expressing this critical moment in history. 1918 premiered to sell out audiences in Wellington during the Measina Festival 2015 then remounted for a performance season at the Mangere Arts Centre in Auckland. In 2016, the work toured to the National University of Sāmoa, San Diego International Fringe Festival 2016 – receiving the critics’ choice and top box office awards followed by sell out performances in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for kids/students at the door. Children under 5 are free!

Proceeds from ticket sales will go back to Le Moana and a percentage will help the Polynesian Student Alliance fundraise as we continue to plan our outreach and tutoring activities for Pacific Islander high school students in the Puget Sound region. We would be very grateful and appreciative if you are able to support our endeavors or if you could help us by passing along this information and flyer to anyone who may be interested in attending this event! Thank you for your time and consideration and we hope to see you there this Saturday!
