Special Engagement for STEM Undergrads and Grad Students
Please join the Graduate Opportunities & Minority Achievement Program (GO-MAP)<http://www.grad.washington.edu/gomap/> and the Simpson Center for the Humanities<http://depts.washington.edu/uwch/> on Thursday, March 7, 10-11:30 am in HUB 334, for a special engagement with Ron Eglash, professor of Science and Technology Studies at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
A cyberneticist specializing ethnomathematics, Dr. Eglash studies the relationship between math and culture, and its implications for social justice and sustainability. This occasion will be a chance to engage Dr. Eglash on addressing diversity, equity, and access in STEM fields. You might be interested in his recently published “Race, Sex, and Nerds,” which looks at the socio-cultural norms and barriers that shape participation in STEM fields, and some strategies for challenging them, too. It is available online at: http://homepages.rpi.edu/~eglash/eglash.dir/ethnic.dir/nerds.pdf.
You may also be interested in his TED lecture<http://www.ted.com/speakers/ron_eglash.html>.
