Effective Learning
For Medical School Sometimes even the best students feel overwhelmed during Medical School. The breath and depth of the information you are expected to master in a short amount of time may require a change in strategy.
If you would like to discuss how to become a more effective learner, time management issues, test anxiety, or knowledge organization, contact Peg Pattee to arrange an appointment.
Wellness
Most of us know when we are feeling our best. We are sleeping well, eating nutritious meals, getting daily exercise and feeling centered. If you feel overwhelmed, depressed, or stressed, there are people who can help you sort things out.
- Some people find meditation is helpful. Jon Kabat-Zinn writes about mindful meditation in his books Wherever You Go, There You Are, and Coming to Our Senses. Mark Wicks, counselor for UW SOM, leads mindful meditation each week while school is in session; contact wicks@u.washington.edu.
- Weekly yoga classes are held in the T wing, again while school is in session. Contact Alan Kent, ajkent@u.washington.edu.
- School of Medicine counselors, Joanne Estacio Deckard, joanneed@u.washington.edu, Mark Wicks, wicks@u.washington.edu, or Alan Kent, ajkent@u.washington.edu are all available to help.
- Hall Health Primary Care Center offers a wide range of services as well as a Wellness Resource Center. Check out http://hallhealth.washington.edu for more information.
USMLE
The National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) administers the certifying examinations for U. S. Medical students seeking licensure in the United States.
Commonly called Step 1, Step 2, and Step 3, these tests serve as gatekeepers to further medical training. At the University of Washington, second year students generally take Step 1 before clerkships begin in early July. Contact Peg Pattee to get recommendations on creating a study plan, practicing for the test, and general test advice.
The Health Sciences library subscribes to an on line question bank, Exam Master. Exam Master includes questions for USMLE step One, Two, and Three, as well some specialty certification exams such as Internal Medicine, Family Practice, General Surgery, General Pediatrics, and Obstetrics and Gynecology.
