Welcome to the Prematriculation Program

WHAT IT IS

The Prematriculation (PreMat) program is a five week summer enrichment
program for entering medical and dental students. The goal of the PreMat
program is to facilitate students' transition into medical or dental school.

Participants complete an intensive Histology class, and then take a
qualifying exam. Those passing the exam receive credit for Hubio-510,
Histology, and do not have to take the course in the fall quarter.

In addition to Histology, students receive workshops on

  • Study and test taking skills
  • Health Disparities and Cultural competency
  • The Independent Investigative Inquiry curriculum requirement
  • The various health pathways that are offered at UW School of Medicine and School of Dentistry
  • And tips from upperclassmen on surviving medical or dental school.

  • PreMat is sponsored and run by the UW School of Medicine Office of
Multicultural Affairs and School of Dentistry Office of Educational
Partnerships and Diversity. The academic component of PreMat is
taught by faculty from the UW Departments of Biological Structure
and Physiology. Second-year medical students facilitate tutorial
    sessions.

    WHEN AND WHERE
The 2009 PreMat program will run from June 22nd through July 24th.
PreMat takes place at the Magnusson Health Sciences Center on the
    University of Washington campus.

    WHY PARTICIPATE?
Those testing out of Histology in the summer don't have Histology in
their busy fall schedule. Also, study groups that form during the
summer tend to continue through medical/dental school. A nice advantage!

    WHO CAN APPLY?
Any medical student that has been admitted to the University of
Washington School of Medicine is eligible to apply to PreMat.

    HOW TO APPLY
After you have received notice of admission, submit a letter of interest
to the Office of Multicultural Affairs.
