Matt, I agree that xhtml makes sense for a default format particularly for the reason you mention that it's what clients of the existing UW business web services already expect.

Thanks for your feedback on this.

I'm a fan of the explicit file extension in the URI... seems like the cleanest approach to me (and I'm a Rails guy, so that's what I'm used to). Your default extensionless URI is also a great idea. I would expect that default URI to load up the xhtml version of the resource, for two reasons: xhtml is already what users expect as your "default" format, and xhtml will render in a browser for human consumption. Seems like a default format should render something that a human can understand.

I was playing with the test site you sent me via email today. This is super cool. Please post a new blog entry about it and advertise the link when you are done. Its a great example of someone building a search web client on top of the web service to return real classes.

This will enable so much! Thanks to you and your team. I've started working on a new approach to the course catalog search. Currently it's just a Google search--not so great for students looking for classes with specific titles.
The new version will consume this web service and return actual course data. Instructor Course Descriptions would be GREAT as it would allow us to recreate the existing format of the static HTML pages currently used on the course catalog.
Oh, and the new version will be all AJAXy with jQuery... awesome.

As a heads up, R25 is supposed to have a web services API (http://corp.collegenet.com/depts/higher_ed/series/Interfaces_WebServices/). Not sure what version the UW is on, but it might be worth checking out.

Ryan,

That sounds like a compelling use case. I am not sure if R25 holds any classroom info for the ones you are scheduling. It is only limited to general assignment classrooms. Lets plan on getting together so we can dig into this alittle bit more.
