Course descriptions are here!

Course descriptions have been an elusive piece of data for many developers at the UW for some time now. Some developers resorted to screen scraping the UW time schedule, a set of html pages, to get access to the data however those days are behind us now. Course description is now available in the Student Web Service with our most recent V4 release.

Here is an example: https://ws.admin.washington.edu/student/v4/public/course/2009,summer,CSE,100

We are still looking at the possibility of delivering Instructor Submitted Course Descriptions.

Happy programming!

This will enable so much! Thanks to you and your team. I’ve started working on a new approach to the course catalog search. Currently it’s just a Google search–not so great for students looking for classes with specific titles.
The new version will consume this web service and return actual course data. Instructor Course Descriptions would be GREAT as it would allow us to recreate the existing format of the static HTML pages currently used on the course catalog.
Oh, and the new version will be all AJAXy with jQuery… awesome.

I was playing with the test site you sent me via email today. This is super cool. Please post a new blog entry about it and advertise the link when you are done. Its a great example of someone building a search web client on top of the web service to return real classes.
