Welcome to Our Website! The Department of Ophthalmology was established in 1966 and rapidly assumed responsibilities in teaching, research, and patient care. Teaching programs are maintained for medical students, resident physicians, graduate physicians, and paramedical personnel. The University of Washington's
strength in laboratory research carries through, not only to the Department
of Ophthalmology, but to other departments where vision research is ongoing.
The Department of Ophthalmology provides leadership for a Vision Research
Center (Core) Grant that stimulates collaborative
efforts for nearly 50 investigators in vision and ophthalmology throughout
the University of Washington and other institutions. Clinical research is conducted in cataract/anterior segment surgery, corneal and external eye diseases, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, oculoplastics and orbit, pediatric vision disorders, refractive surgery, and retinal diseases. A fully-equipped ophthalmic imaging unit provides photographic documentation for clinical and laboratory research activities. Full- and part-time faculty ophthalmologists deliver patient care in concert with resident physicians at the University of Washington Medical Center, Children's Hospital & Regional Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, and Veterans' Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System. Specialty clinics are held in General Ophthalmology, Cataract, Contact Lenses, Cornea and External Eye Disease, Glaucoma, Low Vision, Neuro-ophthalmology, Oculoplastics and Orbit, Refractive Surgery, Retina, and Adult Strabismus. Modern outpatient clinics are equipped for state-of-the-art ambulatory care and teaching. |
