![]() Ophthalmology 686 - Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound (GHC) ![]() We at Group Health welcome you to your two-week clerkship in Ophthalmology! We feel it is important that you receive some training in eye care during medical school and are pleased that you have elected to do so. The Ophthalmology Clinic is located on the 5th Floor of the Central Medical Center North (also known by its old name, PCF, and as the "red brick building"). It is located on the north side of John Street (across from the main Group Health Hospital on Capitol Hill in Seattle). The street address is: 310 - 15th Avenue East. Some important names and phone numbers are:
On the first Monday of your rotation, please report to the the GHC Eye Clinic at the Fifth Floor Reception Desk, to learn where you are supposed to be. On subsequent mornings of your rotation, clinic begins at 9:00 AM. Parking at GHC has improved in recent years. A pay lot ($3/day) is available at 17th and Thomas Streets [see map]. Students are asked not to use the new parking garage. Do not park in the Safeway parking lot across the CMCN building, and try to avoid parking on city streets (though spaces are occasionally available four blocks or more from the hospital). If you have any questions, please call the Parking Office at (206) 326-3299. We strongly encourage you to use Metro Bus No. 10 from downtown or Bus No. 43 from the University District (serving the University of Washington Medical Center; in fact, it is easily a 15-minute bus ride from the front of UWMC to GHC, but please allow plenty of time). The Health Sciences Express does not stop at GHC. We have arranged for you to spend most of your time with the ophthalmologist who is taking emergency call. The patients you will see "on call" will most closely resemble those you would be likely to encounter in a general medical clinic or a hospital emergency room. If you have developed a specialty interest, please let us know. We will try to adjust accordingingly the patients you see and the information we give you. We encourage you to participate in all aspects of eye care during this clerkship. We will attempt to improve your technical skills with basic examining tools (slit lamp, direct ophthalmoscope, Schiötz tonometer, etc.) as well as show you a broad range of ocular pathology. We suggest that you also observe at least a few operations (cataract extraction, glaucoma surgery) and laser procedures. We look forward to your questions and are willing to go over the study materials if you wish. Please keep in mind, though, that due to the unpredictable nature of emergency calls and a certain sensitivity that must be displayed in a private practice setting, there may be some variability in the educational experience. Again, we look forward to your visit with us. If you have any questions, please ask! Michael R. Gorman, MD *Exception: The first Monday of your rotation [see schedule]. For more information on Ophthalmology Clerkships at the University of Washington, please contact: Dorrie Quirante at (206) 685-1969. |
