Resident Alumni Day

The Thirty-First Annual Resident Alumni Day will be held Saturday, June 16, 2007. The guest speaker is Gregory Hageman, PhD. His primary research interests have been directed toward assessment of pathways involved in the etiology of age-related macular degeneration. His work is currently focused on the development of diagnostics and clinically effective pharmaceuticals for the treatment of AMD.

Dr. Hageman is a graduate of the University of Southern California where he conducted both his undergraduate and graduate studies in biology and marine biology. He is Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Iowa Caver College of Medicine and directs the Cell Biology and Functional Genomics Laboratory. He lives with his wife and two children n Coralville, Iowa.

Dr. Hageman is the third recipient of the Roger Johnson Award for Macular Degeneration Research. Roger H. Johnson, MD, endowed this prize that will be awarded every two years through the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Washington. The purpose of the Award is to stimulate clinical and basic science research to elucidate the pathogenesis of macular degeneration and to develop better treatments. Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is a major cause of visual impairment in the United States for people over age 65. Approximately 1.8 million Americans age 40 and older have advanced AMD. Another 7.3 million people with intermediate AMD are at substantial risk for vision loss.

The conference will be held in the Auditorium, K-069, of the University of Washington Health Sciences Center. The program begins at 8:00 am.

A banquet will be held at the McCormick and Schmick's Harborside Restaurant, 1200 Westlake Avenue North at 7:00pm the evening of June 16, 2007.

This event is sponsored by the University of Washington Department of Ophthalmology and the UW Ophthalmology Resident Alumni Association. For more information on resident-alumni events, please contact Sue Thomas at 206-543-7250.
