Johnson, MD, endowed this prize that will be awarded every two years through the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Washington. The purpose of the Award is to stimulate clinical and basic science research to elucidate the pathogenesis of macular degeneration and to develop better treatments. Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is a major cause of visual impairment in the United States for people over age 65. Approximately 1.8 million Americans age 40 and older have advanced AMD. Another 7.3 million people with intermediate AMD are at substantial risk for vision loss. The conference will be held in the Auditorium, K-069, of the University of Washington Health Sciences Center. The program begins at 8:00 am. This event is sponsored by the University of Washington Department of Ophthalmology and the UW Ophthalmology Resident Alumni Association.
