Ophthalmology Clerkships for Medical Students


The Department of Ophthalmology offers only 2-week, full-time rotations (for a total of 4 credits).


681 - Ophthalmology Clerkship (4 credits, 2-week rotation)
Autumn/Winter/Spring/Summer (AWSpS)


Students gain experience in the diagnosis and treatment of common ocular disorders. Basic examination techniques include tonometry, ophthalmoscopy, and biomicroscopy (slit lamp).

683 - Pediatric Ophthalmology Clerkship (4 credits, 2-week rotation) (W, S)
Avery H. Weiss (CHRMC)

The student will examine and observe treatment of children with ocular diseases and will learn to differentiate trivial from potentially blinding disorders.

Prerequisite: Completion of HuBio series; third- and fourth-year University of Washington medical students only.

685 - Ophthalmology Clerkship (4 credits, 2-week rotation) (AWSpS)
James C. Orcutt (VAPSHCS)

The student will participate in the diagnosis and treatment of medical and surgical ocular disease. This clerkship includes outpatient examinations, inpatient surgery, as well as neuro-ophthalmological, retinal, and glaucoma consultations. Student learns basic techniques involved in tonometry, ophthalmoscopy, and biomicroscopy of the eye.

686 - Ophthalmology Clerkship (4 credits, 2-week rotation) (AWSpS)
Michael R. Gorman/David C. Brandt (GHC)

The student will work with clinical faculty in the diagnosis and treatment of ocular diseases commonly seen in outpatients. Each week the student will be assigned to the Group Health Cooperative ophthalmologist responsible for the care of walk-in and urgent-care patients (most likely to demonstrate findings pertinent to the future practice of primary care physicians). There will be an opportunity to learn examination techniques including tonometry, ophthalmoscopy, and biomicroscopy.

687 - Ophthalmology Clerkship (4 credits, 2-week rotation) (AWSpS)
James L. Kinyoun(UWMC)

The student will participate in the diagnosis and management of commonly-seen eye diseases; sub-specialty clinics will include cornea, retina, neuro-ophthalmology, glaucoma, contact lenses, and strabismus. The student attends regularly-scheduled conferences in ophthalmic basic and clinical science.
