The UW Ophthalmology Alumni Association

In 1970, the University of Washington Medical School graduated its first class of ophthalmology residents.  Over the last 38 years, we have graduated 130 ophthalmologists from our program.  Serving the people of the Pacific Northwest, our residents come from medical schools across the nation; many remain in the area after their training, some find their way to other locations.

Today, there are graduates of the UW Ophthalmology residency practicing in 27 states.  They are on the faculty of academic institutions and are working as comprehensive ophthalmologists and specialists, in group practices and as solo practitioners.  UW Ophthalmology Alumni are active as officers and leaders of professional, state and national societies.

The tie that binds these 130 ophthalmologists is their time spent at the University of Washington and the hospitals that they received their training in – UW Medical Center, Seattle Children’s Hospital, the Puget Sound VA and Harborview Medical Center.

In 1986, a group of alumni formed the University of Washington Ophthalmology Alumni Association to support the educational activities of the Department.  Membership is open to all who are completed a residency or fellowship in good standing.

The Alumni Association holds a reception each year for members to renew friendships and learn about what is happening at UW.  The event takes place during the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting.  In addition, the Alumni Association assists with the planning and supports the activities associated with the Department’s annual educational and scientific symposium, Resident Alumni Day, held in the spring of each year.

Officers for the 2009-2010 year were elected at the 2009 Resident Alumni Day.
