The Fellowship Application Process

Candidates should complete applications for the Vitreoretinal Fellowship as early as warranted by interest in the fellowship. Candidates must have satisfactorily completed an accredited residency in ophthalmology prior to beginning fellowship training and be licensed to practice medicine in the State of Washington.

Candidates will be invited for interview after preliminary judgments are made upon the basis of the written application and supporting documents. Selection is made through the Ophthalmology Fellowship Match (OFM). Successful candidates will be appointed concurrently as a Senior Fellow and as a junior faculty member at the rank of Acting Instructor.

The stipend for the first year will correspond to the approved National Research Service Award Level for years of training, i.e. currently $36,036 annually for a physician who has completed residency training (4 years postgraduate training). The stipend for the second year will correspond to the then-existing University of Washington level for trainees in the fifth postgraduate (R5) year, currently $42,008 annually.
Other benefits include generous health, dental, and life insurance, as well as malpractice coverage. Appointments are expected to be two years in duration, renewable annually, but longer periods of training can be negotiated to meet educational needs of the fellow.
