POLICIES FOR ELECTIVE CLERKSHIPS TAKEN AT NON-SEATTLE WWAMI SITES AND INSTITUTIONS NOT AFFILIATED WITH THE UW SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
DEFINITION
- This category of clerkship is defined as "not pre-established" except in the case of international courses and courses established by specific departments, such as the Family Medicine 670, 671, 672 series.
- Numbers assigned to those courses outside the WWAMI area will be in the 697 series within the appropriate department.
- Numbers assigned to those courses inside the WWAMI area will be in the 699 series within the appropriate department.
- International courses will have a unique number such as Conjoint 697 (currently used for the China International Exchange Program) and Family Medicine 672.
ELIGIBILITY/APPROVAL
- Clerkships taken in this category will be permitted only after three quarters of the required clerkships have been completed. In addition, students wishing to pursue an international elective during the Winter and/or Spring Quarters of their final year must have completed all of the required clerkships and the ISMS paper.
- Students may not take multiple electives in the same specialty.
- Prior to taking these courses, students must first receive written approval from the department which has agreed to act as sponsor, then approval from the Academic Affairs Office which reviews the student's clinical experiences, academic performance, and academic needs to ensure that the student is in good standing and has met all eligibility requirements.
TIMING
- Once the student has determined the site and nature of the proposed experience, he/she should contact Trudy Furberry in Registration and Scheduling to initiate the relevant forms.
- Students should bring the approved Away forms to Trudy Furberry no later than two (2) months prior to the proposed beginning date.
- Retroactive credit may not be awarded for any course or clerkship including those taken in this category.
CREDIT
- The maximum number of credits from these NON-WWAMI electives which may be counted toward graduation is 24, which is 12 weeks of full-time work. To earn credit, students must be registered at the University of Washington for credit for the quarter in which this assignment is made. All arrangements must be completed before the student leaves the UW and must be in accordance with the regular scheduling deadlines established by Registration and Scheduling.
- Students are not covered by malpractice insurance unless they are formally enrolled for credit at the University of Washington.
EVALUATION OF STUDENT PERFORMANCE
- A standard evaluation of the student's performance, as required in all clerkships in the University of Washington system, is required. For this purpose, Registration and Scheduling gives each student a "Student Performance Evaluation University of Washington School of Medicine" form to give to the site.
- It is the student's responsibility to be certain the site has this form and clear instructions as to where the form should be sent and when.
- It is the site's responsibility to complete this form and send it to the sponsoring department within six (6) weeks following the end of the clerkship.
- It is department's responsiblity to obtain the evaluation from the site and forward it to Registration and Scheduling no later than six (6) weeks following completion of the rotation.
SITE EVALUATION
- Each student participating in clerkships which are not pre-established within the curriculum is required to provide the Academic Affairs Office and the sponsoring department with a written evaluation of the experience. The Registration and Scheduling Office maintains a site evaluation file which is available to other students, advisors, and sponsoring departments.
