The Oculoplastic Fellowship Program

The oculoplastic fellowship program at the University of Washington is designed to develop clinicians competent in medical, surgical, and laboratory aspects of diseases of the eyelids, tear system, orbit, and adjacent facial regions. Hospitals affiliated with the department include University of Washington Medical Center, Children's Hospital & Regional Medical Center, Harborview Medicial Center, and Veterans' Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System.

The fellowship is two years in duration and is approved by the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS). The majority of the two years are devoted to clinical training, but a research requirement exists to satisfy the thesis component for membership in ASOPRS. Additional research projects are encouraged. Research support is provided by the James L. Hargiss Ophthalmic Plastic, Reconstructive and Orbital Surgery Fellowship, which provides approximately $5000/year to carry out these projects.
Clinical experience will be provided under faculty supervision in broad categories of diagnosis and treatment (for investigation into the clinical or basic science of the eyelid, tear system, orbit, or adjacent facial regions). Laboratory facilities are available in the Department of Ophthalmology and throughout the School of Medicine. Full-time faculty preceptors are James C. Orcutt, MD, PhD, Arash Jian-Amadi, MD, Robert N. Tower, MD, and Clinical Faculty Members James L. Hargiss, MD, and Kristin Tarbet, MD. Application forms and information are available online and are due on Friday, January 4, 2008. The start date for this position is July 7, 2009.

Integration With the Residency Program

Oculoplastic fellows will be expected to complement the residency training program, and will provide consultation to resident physicians and may supervise resident surgery. The oculoplastic fellows will be encouraged to attend and participate in resident teaching sessions and weekly Grand Rounds.
