
![]() About the UW and the School of Medicine ![]() The University of Washington was founded in 1861 on a ten-acre knoll in what is now downtown Seattle, and was moved in 1895 to its present 660-acre site on the shores of Lake Washington. Instruction is offered in more than 200 academic disciplines. Noted for its beauty and architecture, the campus includes the School of Medicine, founded in 1945 and housed in the Warren G. Magnuson Health Sciences Center. Other Health Sciences Schools include Nursing, Dentistry, Public Health and Community Medicine, and Pharmacy. The School of Medicine has a full-time faculty of over 1,100, a clinical faculty of approximately 4,000, and a medical student body of over 700. Fully accredited residency training programs are maintained in all major specialties. Offices and research facilities for the clinical departments are located in the School of Medicine and at five major affiliated hospitals. The UW Medical Center, a newly renovated, 450-bed structure, is located in the Warren G. Magnuson Health Sciences Complex. Harborview Medical Center, a modern downtown hospital, provides emergency and trauma care. Children's Hospital & Regional Medical Center, located not far from the University of Washington, is the regional resource for all tertiary children's care. Seattle Veterans' Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System occupies a 1985 replacement hospital that provides up-to-date, comprehensive medical care for veterans living in the Pacific Northwest. |
