The University of Washington recognizes that offering childcare is an important benefit to our employees and students with children. UW Human Resources’ coordinates the UW’s three Children’s Centers on or near the main UW Campus, and the children’s center at Harborview Medical Center.

Finding Childcare Outside the UW

Priority Access Childcare at Bright Horizons: Bright Horizons Family Solutions is a leader in
employer-sponsored childcare and early education. UW faculty, staff, and students are eligible for enrollment priority at designated Bright Horizons centers on a first-come, first-served basis. Contact Bright Horizons to locate centers in your area and receive information on their tuition rates and potential waitlists. All necessary registration and tuition fees are the responsibility of the family. Once you have decided on your desired Bright Horizons location, email WorkLife for priority access approval, before registering at Bright Horizons.

Childcare Referral Service: UW CareLink offers a childcare referral service that can help you locate professional, quality care for your infant through pre-schooler. You can access the full array of UW CareLink resources through the APS HealthLink portal (use “UW” as the company code to log in and register). Look for the LIVEConnect instant messaging tool in the upper right corner of the home page for access to a consultant who specializes in childcare referral services.

Caregiver Directory

The Caregiver Directory, is a free service provided by the Graduate and Professional Student Senate for University of Washington faculty, staff, and students. It provides a means to connect potential caregivers and employers for childcare, elder or adult care, or to run errands or do light housekeeping.

Sick Child Care

If your child is mildly ill and between one and 12 years old, you have access to sick child care through Tender Loving Care at Virginia Mason Medical Center. The University underwrites the entire daily fee for UW benefits-eligible employees working .50 FTE or more and for academic student employees. Eligible families pay only a one-time registration fee of $5 per child.

Emergency Back-Up Care

UW Worklife and Bright Horizons offer a specialized back-up care program to all UW faculty, staff, and students. Use the Bright Horizons Back-Up Care Advantage program when your regular caregiver is unavailable, you are transitioning back to work after leave, or your child’s regular school is closed. Bright Horizons has numerous centers in the area ready to provide for these emergent needs.

WorkLife has a one-stop registration and call center open 24/7 designed to help you evaluate your needs and the centers available to you. If this is a service you may need to access in the future, register now, so that if an emergency arises, you’ll be ready to call or go online to find care. To register call 877-242-2737 or visit Bright Horizons Back-up Care Advantage. On the website log in with the user name UnivWA, and the password is 4Backup. After you login you will create a personal account that only you can access.

Once registered, you will log into your personal account where you can request care up to one month in advance of the date it is needed, find child care locations near your home, check invoices, find details on providers, and more. Be prepared to show your current UW Husky card at time of drop-off. The cost is $100 per day, paid by the parent of the enrolled child.

Childcare Assistance Program for Students

For student parents, the Childcare Assistance Program for Students provides information about childcare and other programs, including financial assistance to cover basic childcare costs for those eligible.
