In 1993, the University of Washington entered into Recognition Agreements with the privately owned, residential fraternities and sororities associated with the campus. The Agreements have proved to be quite helpful in promoting the positive qualities of Greek life and compliance with applicable laws and policies. By signing the Agreement, organizations commit to abide by certain well-defined rules, and are, as a result, officially recognized by the University and entitled to a number of University privileges.

There are currently 45 residential organizations, serving some 3,000 undergraduate men and women. The University officially recognizes 15 of the 16 sororities, and all of the 29 active fraternities. For further information on recognition status, link to fraternity and sorority status pages.

Greek organizations that do not provide housing for their members, such as ethnic, academic or service fraternities and sororities, are supported through the Student Activities Office.
