PR Edit Mode Dictation

Tips and Tricks

GENERAL SUGGESTIONS:

  1. Select your document model before you start dictating.
  2. Say the punctuation.
  3. Speak in sentences, not individual words.  PR listens to what you are trying to say, not just what words you are speaking.
  4. If you can’t get it to recognize an individual word, try replacing a phrase (or the entire sentence.)  PR relies on context more than individual words.
  5. If you are saying “6 cm by 5 cm” and the system does not type 6 cm x 5 cm, try saying “times” instead of “by”.

SECTION TITLES:

If you clobber a section title

  1. Use Ctrl Z to recover it.

   Or…

  1. Highlight the section title and say “toggle section” to restore it.

DATES:

  1. Say October 27th 2009 or 10/27/2009, not 10 27 2009 or 10 / 27 / 09.
  2. Saying the word “dated” or “on”, or “from” before the date is helpful.  Or use a sentence “Compared to study dated October 10, 2009.  This tells the system you are about to dictate a date.

COMMANDS:

For problems with commands, there are two key things to check.

  1. Make sure you aren’t clipping (more red than green on the mike display.)  The mike volume adjustment on the far right side of the report window will fix this. Note, occasional red is ok.
  2. Leave a tiny pause between the command and the text.  “Select <tiny pause> maxillofacial structures”.  The pause can be quite brief, but it seems to make a huge difference in our testing.  It is equally critical for “delete”.  “Delete <tiny pause> that.  Along the way, we also noticed, “Undo <tiny pause> that” is very affective and can be repeated several times to repeatedly delete previous actions.  It’s all about cadence.
  3. Give the application time to respond to the command before resuming dictation.

BRACKETS:

  1. The first word after a bracket will not be capitalized.  You must do this manually.  There is no “proper case” command.
  2. Work-around:  Tab to the brackets, say “scratch that” (or press the delete key) to remove the brackets, and then begin your dictation.
  3. If you save the report as draft, be sure to save it as preliminary before signing.  Preliminary status removes the brackets.

MACROS:

If you go into Manage Macros and then leave without inserting anything, the “insert macro” command will not subsequently work.  You need to go back into Manage Macros and insert something to restore the function.  It’s a bug we’ve reported.

MICROPHONE:

We recommend “Press and hold” preference for the mike button because the commands work better.

  1. Turn on the mike, give a command, and turn off the mike so it responds to the command before you begin dictating.
  2. Tab to the next (or previous) field when the mike is off.  Start your dictation when the cursor is in the desired field.
  3. If you want to dictate without holding the mike record button, click the red record button with your mouse and click the mike key when your are done.  It will stay in record mode till you click the mike record key or the icon to turn it off.
  4. If the mike shows no connection, try closing the report and reopen.  This usually fixes the problem.

  or

No connection.  If , hover the cursor over the icon to display an error message.
If , no error message is available.
The light on the microphone is off in this status.

Connection made. The Microphone is available for dictation of dictation.

  Waiting

Waiting for translation.  The light on the microphone is off in this status.

When the mike is left on and you are not speaking, it picks up and “prints” background noise into your report.  Turn it off when you stop speaking.

DOCUMENT MODEL SEARCHES:

  1. Description field searches do not work for specific words.  You must search by the first word of the description.
  2. Search on the first 2 letters of the Model codes:
