A current University of Washington junior in civil engineering explained, \u201cEvery part of civil engineering is interesting \u2013 because no matter where you go, you get to play in the world\u2019s biggest sandbox; it\u2019s just what tools you want to play with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1981\" alt=\"Robert Stevens, ASCE President\" src=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Robert_stevens_web.jpg\" width=\"494\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Robert_stevens_web.jpg 494w, http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Robert_stevens_web-300x191.jpg 300w, http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Robert_stevens_web-97x62.jpg 97w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 494px) 100vw, 494px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Robert Stevens, President of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), posed this question to students and professionals alike in his talk, \u201cEngineering the Future,\u201d on February 19. Using his own prolific career and involvement in ASCE as a springboard, Stevens discussed the outlook of civil engineering education and leadership development, and dispensed words of wisdom for young engineers still exploring their educational and professional path.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the qualities required to excel in engineering leadership today, Stevens offered specific advice. \u201cParticipate. You\u2019ve got to speak up. If you want to succeed, and by succeed, I mean have a career that you enjoy, you need\u2026 to work with other people,\u201d said Stevens. \u201cIt comes from taking the risk and trying. When you\u2019re asked to raise your hand, raise your hand. Get involved.
