{"id":3833,"date":"2016-08-17T12:58:29","date_gmt":"2016-08-17T20:58:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/?p=3833"},"modified":"2016-08-17T12:59:11","modified_gmt":"2016-08-17T20:59:11","slug":"engineering-for-resilience-osu-cces-surf-students-present-research-on-cascadia-subduction-zone-hazards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/engineering-for-resilience-osu-cces-surf-students-present-research-on-cascadia-subduction-zone-hazards\/","title":{"rendered":"Engineering for Resilience: OSU CCE\u2019s SURF Students Present Research on Cascadia Subduction Zone Hazards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/SURF-2016b.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3835\" src=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/SURF-2016b.jpg\" alt=\"SURF 2016b\" width=\"505\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/SURF-2016b.jpg 900w, http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/SURF-2016b-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/SURF-2016b-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/SURF-2016b-97x65.jpg 97w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 505px) 100vw, 505px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This summer, Oregon State University\u2019s annual Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program provided eleven fellowships to support hands-on research toward increasing community resilience in response to Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ) earthquakes and tsunamis. <!--more-->During the seven-week program, students participated in a specific project related to CSZ hazards, learned about engineering for natural hazards resilience, and developed research skills to increase graduate school opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Each student was equipped with a $4,500 stipend, and a research project with a faculty mentor, and had the opportunity to participate in field trips to Newport, Oregon for site-specific field work, weekly seminars from noted speakers on earthquake and tsunami resilience, informal lunch meetings to discuss graduate school, and most recently a final symposium on August 4, 2016 to highlight the students\u2019 hard work.<\/p>\n<p>PacTrans consortium universities are committed to workforce development and to encouraging students to pursue higher level transportation related educations.
