Hendrickson, Duquesne Light Company University Professor of Engineering and Co-Director of the Green Design Institute at Carnegie Mellon University<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Abstract:<\/strong> With an increasing number of states mandating the sale of zero emissions vehicles, manufacturers are responding in part by developing electric or battery hybrid vehicles. While widespread use of electric vehicles has the potential to reduce tailpipe emissions, the full environmental cost of producing and operating battery powered vehicles must be considered. This talk discusses the potential environmental impacts of battery powered motor vehicles, including earlier lead acid battery versions and new battery chemistries.
