{"id":5674,"date":"2019-07-30T14:56:53","date_gmt":"2019-07-30T22:56:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/?p=5674"},"modified":"2019-07-30T14:56:53","modified_gmt":"2019-07-30T22:56:53","slug":"congestion-vs-connected-autonomous-vehicles-video-lands-osu-graduate-student-a-scholarship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/congestion-vs-connected-autonomous-vehicles-video-lands-osu-graduate-student-a-scholarship\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cCongestion vs. Connected Autonomous Vehicles\u201d video lands OSU graduate student a scholarship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5675 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Congestion-vs.-Connected-....jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Congestion-vs.-Connected-....jpg 460w, http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Congestion-vs.-Connected-...-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Congestion-vs.-Connected-...-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Congestion-vs.-Connected-...-97x97.jpg 97w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctoral candidate, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Alireza_Mostafizi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alireza Mostafizi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from PacTrans constituent university, OSU, was the recipient of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cce.oregonstate.edu\/node\/646\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 &#8211; 2019 Bill Kloos scholarship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, presented by the Oregon Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) last March.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonite.org\/bill-kloos-scholarships.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bill Kloos scholarship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, offered by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonite.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oregon ITE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the Bill Kloos Scholarship Fund, is named after William C. Kloos, who had spent 25 years of his life serving as the Signals and Street Light Manager at the City of Portland.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kloos was most well known for his ability to communicate technical information in a way that a variety of audiences could understand. This scholarship was developed to both financially aid students pursuing careers in transportation engineering, and promote the same communication skills and innovative thinking that Kloos had.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Candidates are asked to submit an application in order to be considered for the scholarship. However, the application has no set format. Students are encouraged to express their ideas in whichever way they choose, whether that be in the form of an essay, poster, Powerpoint presentation, or video. This is meant to push students to think outside the box.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mostafizi was recognized for his video, \u201cCongestion vs. Connected &amp; Autonomous Vehicles,\u201d which discussed emerging technologies in connected and autonomous vehicles, and how they will change our transportation system and increase mobility.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mostafizi is a data scientist and has been at OSU for the past four years.
