One way to solve it: get kids excited about careers in transportation.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A PacTrans project, titled, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/research\/projects\/inspiring-transportation-careers-with-k-12-curriculum-activities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspiring Transportation Careers with K-12 Transportation Curriculum Activities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d led by WSU\u2019s former Research Operations Engineer, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Michelle_Akin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michelle Akin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was presented at Garfield-Palouse STEAM Night late last January.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/2018_S_WSU_Hotsheet2.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> brings a broad range of transportation topics to STEM fairs, classrooms, after-school programs, and summer camps, in an attempt to grow transportation knowledge, and interest in transportation education and careers in elementary, middle, and high school students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By equipping the next generation of potential transportation workers with a diverse background in multi-modal transportation, and new, innovative, and sustainable ideas, will open the doors to more accessible maintenance, operations, and expansion decision options.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a focus on multi-modal transportation and isolated communities, and through the inclusion of diverse communities, this project aligns with PacTrans\u2019 special topic areas, \u201cAccess for All\u201d and \u201cImproved Reliability Across Modes.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outreach events in Pullman, WA, Moscow, ID, and Coeur d\u2019Alene Indian Reservation feature hands-on, transportation-themed activities. Young participants are taught the positive impacts of the mobility, safety, and economic opportunity that will likely come with the future of our transportation system, while being encouraged to pursue a future in transportation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project was also displayed at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/orgsync.com\/52287\/opportunities\/2516101\/occurrences\/6064776\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Franklin Elementary STEAM Night<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last October, and the 9th Annual <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nezperce.org\/event\/stem-fair\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nez Perce Tribe STEM Fair<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, pictured above, in Lapwai, ID last December. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Transportation employees are met with stress and struggle in response to the shortage in transportation work versus the ever growing demands of our current market.
