{"id":5772,"date":"2019-10-01T14:26:21","date_gmt":"2019-10-01T22:26:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/?p=5772"},"modified":"2019-10-01T14:26:55","modified_gmt":"2019-10-01T22:26:55","slug":"drivers-saved-from-high-wind-blow-over-along-i-80","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/drivers-saved-from-high-wind-blow-over-along-i-80\/","title":{"rendered":"Drivers saved from high wind blow-over along I-80"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5773 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/wyoming-semi-police-cruiser-2017-2-11-e1569968751442.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"505\" height=\"265\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PacTrans PI and Professor of Civil Engineering at Gonzaga University, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gonzaga.edu\/academics\/faculty-listing\/detail\/youngr1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rhonda Young<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was the star of a recent episode of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sicop.transportation.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AASHTO\u2019s Snow and Ice Pooled Fund Cooperative Program (SICOP)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On this episode of the podcast, titled, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sicop.transportation.org\/2019\/06\/29\/episode-23-is-the-wind-blowing-in-wyoming-high-wind-blow-over-hazard-warnings\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is the wind blowing in Wyoming? High wind blow-over hazard warning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d Young was brought in to discuss how up and coming CV technology can be utilized to improve roadway operations during adverse weather conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Young also highlighted <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sicop.transportation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/36\/2019\/06\/TRB_2019_RYoung.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the work she had previously presented<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at last year\u2019s Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting in relation to the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/gonzaga-senior-design-team-finishes-work-on-cv-pilot-deployment-project\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USDOT Connected Vehicle Pilot Deployment Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is currently being applied along Interstate 80 through Wyoming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project uses <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ral.ucar.edu\/solutions\/products\/pikalert%C2%AE\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pikalert<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a system developed by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ncar.ucar.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Center for Atmospheric Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is designed to process CV data and alert drivers with high wind blow over hazard warnings in times of less than ideal weather conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pikalert also has the ability to provide actionable alerts to TMC operators, and forecast weather and \u201cnow-cast\u201d surface conditions. The system has proven to be particularly helpful to commercial traffic on I-80.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since its deployment, Pikalert has had numerous real-world impacts. Fleet managers and drivers along I-80 have experienced safer, more swift travel with an increase in the amount, timeliness, and quality of information they are receiving from the system.
