{"id":6224,"date":"2020-09-09T09:15:14","date_gmt":"2020-09-09T17:15:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/?p=6224"},"modified":"2020-09-09T09:15:52","modified_gmt":"2020-09-09T17:15:52","slug":"smart-lockers-save-belltown-from-dwelling-and-delivery-emissions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/smart-lockers-save-belltown-from-dwelling-and-delivery-emissions\/","title":{"rendered":"Smart lockers save Belltown from dwelling and delivery emissions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"820\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/4th-bell-locker-image-820x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6225\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Belltown residents will have an easier time receiving their packages with the launch of a <a href=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/sctlctr\/news-events\/announcements\/belltown-pilot-test-site-selected-new-freight-management-technologies\">smart locker system<\/a> by the University of Washington\u2019s Urban Freight Lab (UFL) in Seattle\u2019s Belltown neighborhood last August.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>UFL\u2019s U.S. Department of Energy-funded project is part of a three-year study focused on \u201cmeasuring emissions associated with moving goods,\u201d based on \u201clocal delivery vehicle travel patterns,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.belltownlockers.com\/\">Belltown lockers website<\/a>. Their goal is to decrease city delivery emissions and dwell time, while increasing the \u201cproductivity of load\/unload parking spaces,\u201d according to a press release.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This project is also in partnership with the City of Seattle, King County Metro, Sound Transit, CBRE, Puget Sound Clean Air Agency, and the City of Bellevue.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UPS, FedEx, and other major carriers can now drop packages off at UFL\u2019s Belltown locker location, which is easily accessible, contactless, and available 24\/7, so users can retrieve their items safely and at their own convenience.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe explosion of online shopping has flooded the streets of Seattle and many other cities with delivery vehicles, and the trend is expected to grow even further in the coming years, resulting in increased congestion and negative environmental impacts,\u201d UFL Manager and Research Scientist, Andisheh Ranjbari, said in a press release. \u201cSo, it is important to evaluate new solutions such as open network locker systems, to help cities mitigate the harmful impacts of increased online shopping on congestion and carbon emissions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"299\" height=\"329\" src=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Locker-location-e1599671688925.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6226\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belltown locals are invited to sign up for free online, order their packages to the Belltown pick-up location, and retrieve their items within seven days of delivery.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this project, UFL is working in collaboration with Parcel Pending by Quadient, and parking magnate REEF. This isn\u2019t the first time the UFL and Parcel Pending have teamed up; as part of <a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/common-carrier-lockers-are-the-future-of-receiving-deliveries\/\">an initial pilot program in 2018<\/a>, the two introduced an open-network locker system to the Seattle Municipal Tower, a project that was partially funded by PacTrans.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pilot aimed to <a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/research\/projects\/final-50-feet-of-the-urban-goods-delivery-system-pilot-test-of-an-innovative-improvement-strategy\/\">reduce the number of failed first delivery attempts<\/a>, in which it succeeded by completely eliminating the issue. It also \u201creduced [the] time needed for deliveries by 78% when compared to traditional floor-to-floor and door-to-door delivery,\u201d according to a press release.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cParcel Pending is honored to assist The Urban Freight Lab with the implementation and technical support for this research project,\u201d SVP Business Development for Parcel Pending, Kate Reidel, said in a press release. \u201cOur lockers provide a safe, secure and most importantly contact-free way for consumers to retrieve their online orders and packages at their convenience.
