Dr. Shannon's area of scholarship is health care ethics, specifically end-of-life decisions. Research studies have used both qualitative and quantitative methods and include family's experiences with surrogate decision-making for dying loved ones, organizational patterns of dying in critical care, improving communication between the health care team and families around end-of-life decision-making.

Dr. Shannon is a long time member of several local hospital ethics committees. She is a regular faculty member of the annual Summer Seminar in Health Care Ethics course and the annual Ethics of Research with Humans course, and is a frequent speaker locally on issues in bioethics.
