The Palliative Care Center of Excellence (PCCE) proposal has been selected for one of the presentations at the 2012 Washington End of Life Consensus Coalition (WEOLCC) Annual Meeting.
Dr. J. Randall Curtis, director of Palliative Care Center of Excellence will present on the Palliative Care Center of Excellence Program.

Combined Palliative Care Seminar
The UW Department of Family Medicine is hosting a combined seminar presented by Palliative Care faculty candidates Gary Bucholz, MD, and Kim Bower, MD. Dr. Bucholz is a candidate for the Assistant Director of Palliative Care position and Dr. Kim Bower is a candidate for a faculty position, also with the Palliative Care Service.
When: Wednesday, January 2, 12:30 - 1:30 pm Location: Health Sciences, D-209.
These presentations can also be viewed via televideo at the Northgate Clinic Classroom.
Gary Bucholz, MD, will be presenting on dyspnea. The basic pathophysiology of dyspnea will be reviewed with recommendations for an evidence based treatment plan.
Artistic expressions of "Last Breath" will also be explored
Dr. Kimberly Bower will be presenting:
"Partners for Children: A Home-Based Pediatric Palliative Care Pilot Program".
Dr. Bower will examine case studies and outcomes from the Medicaid funded pilot program, Partners for Children.
UW Palliative Care Center of Excellence
The Inaugural Visiting Lecture
The UW PCCE welcomed Dr. Susan Block as the presenter for the Inaugural visiting lecturer on Oct. 8, 2012. Lecture title: "Moving Conversations about the End of Life Upstream: The Serious Illness Communication Checklist"
Dr. Block also met with leaders of the PCCE Operations during her visit.
Dr. Block is the Chair of the Department of Psychosocial Oncology and Palliative Care at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women's Hospital.
At Harvard she is Professor of Medicine and Psychiatry and Co-Director of the Center for Palliative Care, Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Block is a national leader in palliative care education, research, and clinical care and has
contributed significantly to career development in palliative care.
Northwest Hospital
New Palliative Care Program Manager
Northwest Hospital’s new Palliative Care Consult Service will launch limited operations in January 2013, with full operations following on February 1, 2013.
Katie Poinier, RN, BSN, the current Charge RN and Case Manager for the HMC Outpatient Palliative and Supportive Care Clinic will be the new Program Manager.
The Palliative Care Center of Excellence leadership is excited to welcome Katie and looks forward to the launch of the new Northwest Hospital Palliative Care Service.
Attending providers for the service include Darrell Owens, DNP who will also serve as the Administrative Director, Jim Gordon, MD who will serve as the Medical Director, and Megan Morrison, ARNP.
Dr. J Randall Curtis - First Montgomery Chair

Dr. J. Randall Curtis, professor (PCC) has been named as the first holder of the A. Bruce Montgomery-American Lung
Association Endowed Chair in
Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
Dr. Curtis is an adjunct professor in three departments; the Department of Biobehavioral Nursing and Health Systems in the School of Nursing, the Department of Health Services in the School of Public Health, and the Department of Bioethics and Humanities in the School of Medicine.
Dr. Curtis is the section head for Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Harborview Medical Center and the director of the new UW Palliative Care Center of Excellence.
Dr. Curtis’ research focuses on improving palliative and end-of-life care for patients with critical illness and their families and improving communication about palliative and end-of-life care for patients with chronic and life-limiting illnesses including COPD, heart failure, AIDS, and cancer.
He has an active research program with over 15 years of continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health and is currently Principal Investigator for 3 grants from the National Institutes of Health including two R01 Awards and a K24 Award.
