Commonly Asked Questions

How does the participant pool work?

When a University of Washington researcher needs participants, we send them a list of interested individuals to contact. The researcher's lab directly contacts those on the list to explain their study in depth, including any compensation and what the time commitment might be. At this point, the individual should ask any questions and decide if they would like to participate in that particular study. If you are eligible for a study, but choose not to participate (for any reason), you will remain in the pool unless you ask to be removed.

How will my contact information be handled?

Names and other confidential information are never supplied to anyone outside the University of Washington and its affiliates (UWMC, Fred Hutchinson Center, Children's Hospital). Our database is securely maintained.

When someone signs up to be in the participant pool, do they have to participate in every study they are called for?

No. Participants always have the opportunity to decline to participate in a study, but will remain in the pool for future studies.

What are the studies like?

Each researcher focuses on different topics and ages. In general, these studies are comfortable, interesting, and fun to be a part of. If you agree to participate in a specific study and are uncomfortable for any reason, you can discontinue the study at any time.

Could I receive an information packet in the mail or at a clinic?

Our office sends invitations to participate in the pool to all new parents in this area. We also hand out enrollment packets at various clinics and at some community events. People interested in enrolling themselves or their child in the pool fill out a contact form and return it to our office.

What if a participant has moved or changed contact information?

If you are moving out of the area, you can either call or email our office to be removed from the database. If you are still in the area and would like to continue being a part of the pool, you can call or email us any address and phone changes.

What if a participant is no longer interested or is uncomfortable having themselves or their children in the pool?

Please contact our office and let us know right away. We will immediately remove the name from our database and discontinue any contact.
