Pathogens of the genus Mycobacterium cause tuberculosis, leprosy, MAC (M. avium complex) disease, and other significant diseases of humans. Our research is aimed at understanding the characteristics of the pathogens that facilitate exposure, infection, persistence, and drug resistance.  Current research includes 1) mutational and functional genomic analysis of mycobacterial phase variation phenomena that affect virulence, drug resistance, and biofilm formation; 2) application of genomic techniques to improve our understanding of routes of MAC and TB acquisition; and 3) improved methods for detecting mycobacterial pathogens in clinical and environmental samples.
