Our laboratory seeks to answer fundamental questions about the integration of endocrine and brain function. We are particularly interested in how estrogen influences the aging of the brain and how it may exert neuroprotective actions during aging and after injury. We are currently performing studies in two basic areas. First, we are assessing whether the level of gene expression of key neurotransmitters, neuropeptides or growth factors changes at critical times during the aging process and how the hormonal milieu influences the rate or the anatomical specificity of the alteration. Second, we are examining the mechanisms through which estrogen exerts neurotrophic and neuroprotective effects in the brain during aging and after injury.
