The Raymond and Beverly Sackler Scholars Program in Integrative Biophysics

Sackler Scholars have numerous opportunities to develop and improve skills required for a successful career. These include assistance with grant and fellowship applications, honing of presentation skills by participation in the Sackler Seminars in Biophysics series, and attending other professional development programs at the University of Washington. The School of Medicine offers an intensive two-day Future Faculty Fellows Symposium, sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and held every year in early September. Several faculty members in the Program participate in the event, which is attended each year by 75-100 postdoctoral fellows. It features discussions with faculty about making the most of the postdoctoral experience, honing teaching, communication, and mentoring skills, applying and interviewing for jobs, managing professional and personal life, and other topics. Sackler Scholars are encouraged to participate in this very successful and informative workshop.
To assist in the development of grant writing skills, participating faculty serve as informal reviewers of fellowship applications for Sackler Scholars in other laboratories. These experienced reviewers provide feedback to improve the application and help promote funding success.
