Cardiac contractility is regulated by a process termed excitation-contraction coupling (ECC). ECC, and thus contractility, is modulated by many signaling pathways; one of which is nitric oxide (NO). NO is produced via enzymes termed NO synthase (NOS). Cardiac myocytes constitutively express two distinct isoforms of NOS: neuronal (nNOS, NOS1) and endothelial (eNOS, NOS3). However, the NO-mediated effects on contractility are controversial. My presentation will focus on the contractile effects, end targets and signaling pathways of NOS1 and NOS3.
