I will present evidence that the presence of voltage-gated channels in the dendrites is critical for the function of CA1 pyramidal neurons in the hippocampus. Evidence using patch-clamp recording, electron microscopy, and computational approaches suggest that dendritic excitability plays a central role in the integration of synaptic inputs to the dendrites as well as in synaptic plasticity.
