PCAP Background
- Evidence‐based practices, PCAP program outcomes, cost effectiveness outcomes
The PCAP Model
- Characteristics of effective case management, theoretical framework of the intervention, core components, enrollment criteria, staff roles and training, client recruitment, screening referrals, client intake
The PCAP Intervention
- A two‐pronged approach:
- With the client: establishing the relationship, learning the client’s story, the Difference Game, setting goals and treatment planning, assessing client strengths and needs, challenges, motivational interviewing
- Within the community: services coordination, resolving service barriers
The Client File
- Client services agreement, tracing information, services coordination, releases of information, medical information, goals and assessments, case notes, correspondence
PCAP Best Practices
- Client file reviews, weekly time summary, individual supervision, weekly group staffing, advocate‐client boundaries and standards, concrete activities, tracing tips, strategies for preventing future alcohol and drug exposed births, staff retention
Advocate Safety and Legal Protocols
- Advocate safety, clients involved in the legal systems, mandated reporting, duty to warn
Finding Meaning in the Work
- Avoiding burnout, balancing engagement with detachment
Classroom Training Day 3
- Evaluation basics, administration of clinical and research data collection forms, evaluation/sustainability issues
- PCAP date entry using the DatStat web‐based data entry system
Classroom Training Day 4
- Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD)
- Implementing the PCAP intervention with women who have a FASD

Additional/Optional Training for Supervisors (2 Days):
Addiction Severity Index (ASI) training by Thomas R. Jackson, M.S.W., Expert ASI Trainer
- Standard competency‐based ASI training that includes balanced didactic presentations with small and large group exercises, role‐plays and discussion. Participants will learn the appropriate administration and coding of the Addiction Severity Index maternal interview (PCAP modified version). Field observation with experienced PCAP supervisors, including: intake ASI observation and ASI coding practice, aspects of PCAP administration, individual supervision, group staffing
Additional/Optional Training for Case Managers (2 Days):
Field observation with experienced PCAP case managers, including: home visitation, work with community service provider agencies, individual case manager supervision, group staffing
Additional/optional ongoing technical assistance and consultation is available.
