About Children's...

Children's Hospital & Regional Medical Center, a 250-bed hospital in beautiful Seattle, Washington, is home to an award-winning, state-of-the-art PICU and the University of Washington, Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship. Children's serves the largest geographical area of any children's hospital in the country as the sole academic pediatric medical center for Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho (WWAMI).

Children's has nationally recognized programs ranging from solid organ and bone marrow transplantation, to cystic fibrosis, craniofacial reconstruction, and bioethics. The Department of Pediatrics is consistently recognized as one of the top academic programs in the country. The outpatient department includes a busy emergency department and more than 50 subspecialty clinics located in the recently-opened Melinda French Gates Ambulatory Care Center. Children's is a member of Airlift Northwest, the regional critical care ground and air transport network. In 2007, Children's celebrated its 100th Anniversary and continues to undergo many exciting changes: the latest project being expansion of existing research space to a total of 1 million square feet within the next five years.

Under the direction of Dr. Jerry Zimmerman, the Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Division and facilities offer a wonderful opportunity for clinical and research training. The recently renovated Intensive Care Unit has 45 state-of-the-art beds and monitoring systems and in 2000 received the American Institute of Architecture - SCCM ICU Design Award. The unit was awarded the SCCM Family-Centered Care Award for 2005. Our faculty and fellows participate in the full-spectrum of clinical, translational, basic science and outcomes research. Many of our trainees choose to complete masters training programs to satisfy scholarship requirements and enhance their future academic careers.

Dr. Harris Baden directs the Fellowship and the Cardiac Intensive Care Service, and Dr. Gordon Cohen heads the Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery Program and is Co-Director of the Heart Center. Dr. Tom Brogan and Dr. Rob Mazor are co-medical directors for the busy ECLS programs that include the full-spectrum of mechanical support modalities, and Dr. Joan Roberts leads the hospital's code and rapid response teams.
