Research Interests:
In vivo expression, regulation and function of cytochrome P450 enzymes as they relate to intestinal and hepatic first-pass drug metabolism, drug transport across the blood-brain and blood-spinal cord barrier and cellular compartmentation within the brain, and pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of neuroactive agents, in particular anticonvulsants and opioid analgesics.

 

Biography:

Dr. Shen is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Pharmacy, and also holds a Full Professor appointment in the Department of Pharmaceutics. He is a member in the Clinical Research Division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, where he directs a pain pharmacology research program. Dr. Shen received his Ph.D. in pharmaceutics from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1975. He held faculty appointments at the University of Kansas Medical Center and State University of New York at Buffalo prior to his joining the faculty at the University of Washington in 1984.

Dr. Shen is a Fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS). He is also a member of several other scientific societies, including American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET), American Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (ASCPT), International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), American Society of Pain (APS). He is on the editorial board of Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, AAPS Journal, and Pharmaceutical Research. He has served as advisor or consultant to governmental agencies (e.g. National Institutes of Health, Food and Drug Administration) and drug industry.
