Oakstone Academy

The Oakstone Academy is a non-profit, fully inclusive, chartered school dedicated to serving children with autism and their families. Our commitment is to work collaboratively with educators in our community to make effective services affordable for families and school districts. We are determined to use the principles of applied behavior analysis within the natural environment and implement the most effective empirically based strategies to promote language, social, behavioral, and academic competency in children with autism. Further, we extend continuity of services by providing educational placements from preschool through elementary grades, while supporting the family at home, school, and in the community.

Where we are located

The Oakstone Academy is located in Columbus, Ohio. Local school districts and funding from local county MR/DD boards pay for students to attend the Oakstone Academy. The Oakstone Academy provides educational services for 120 children ages three through nine, of whom 17% are either African American, Hispanic, and Asian. The program operates three preschool classrooms, two full day pre-kindergarten and kindergarten program, and two first through third grade classrooms. Each classroom serves six children with autism and 8-10 typically developing peer models. The children with autism who attend the Oakstone Academy represent seven counties in central Ohio and fourteen different school districts within Franklin County.

Services for Children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD)

The classroom teachers at the Oakstone Academy provide a general education curriculum meeting the state requirements of the Ohio Department of Education. Further, each classroom includes placements for children with autism who receive services outlined through the development and implementation of Individualized Educational Plans. Activities are planned and implemented to promote children's future success in a variety of educational settings. The following empirically-based strategies prove beneficial for all children, but are particularly important for children with autism and therefore provide an empirically-based framework for the inclusive programs. These strategies include but are not limited to the use of photographic activity schedules, precision teaching, Direct Instruction, self-management strategies and peer tutoring.
