    Effective Teaching for Preschool and Elementary Students with ASD & Related Disorders
    August 4-7, 2008 9am-4pm

    Participants will gain information on how to motivate learners, assess core deficits of ASD, evidence based teaching strategies, inclusion, progress monitoring and positive behavior support strategies. Specific content includes:

  • Understanding the students learning needs:Looking at the classroom from the perspective of a student with ASD.
  • Getting students excited about learning:How to motivate students.
  • Planning for learning:Assessing skills in core deficits of ASD.
  • Teaching:Using evidence based practices including discrete trial teaching, environmental arrangements and naturalistic strategies (incidental teaching, pivotal response training and embedded learning opportunities) to promote learning.
  • Including all children:How to modify materials, assignments and instruction for successful participation.
  • Putting it all together:Monitoring efficacy of teaching strategies and monitoring student progress. How to keep and use data to improve student progress
  • Setting up for success:Strategies to prevent challenging behaviors and promote positive interactions

  • Workshop 3

    Promoting Independence and Social Skills for Preschool and Elementary Students with ASD and Related Disorders
    August 8, 2008 9 am-4pm

    Participants will be gain information on teaching students social skills for independence and peer interactions. Specific content includes:

  • Promoting independence
  • Supporting peer interaction
  • Teaching specific social behaviors
  • Evidence based teaching strategies
  • Self-monitoring and organizational strategies

    Effective Practices for Young Children with Autism Summer 2008 June 23-27 ECE 5800

    The purpose of this course is to provide the learner with an understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This course will prepare the learner to work with individuals with ASD by providing information about evidence- based practices and practical teaching strategies. This course will concentrate on addressing the impairments associated with a diagnosis of ASD/PDD, including the areas of communication, socialization and restricted and repetitive behaviors.

    COURSE OBJECTIVES:

    This course will prepare the learner to:

  • Develop Individualized Educational Plans for Individuals with ASD.
  • Modify teaching strategies to accommodate different learning styles, ability levels and interests of students with ASD.
  • Develop and implement behavioral programs.
  • Understand strategies that support families, strengthen their ability to assist their child and encourage family participation in the learning environment.
  • Implement proactive behavior and learning strategies that maintain supportive and inclusive learning environments.
  • Embed opportunities for social interaction into ongoing daily routines.
