WHO IS A POSTDOC? Postdoctoral scholars at the UW are individuals who hold a recently earned, terminal degree (usually PhD, MD, or other comparable credential) and who have elected to pursue further training. Postdocs serve in a time-limited appointment and typically do not hold such appointments for more than a total of five years. Postdocs may be funded by training grants, research grants, or institutional resources. Also relevant to defining a postdoc is the following joint statement adopted by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation: "An individual who has received a doctoral degree (or equivalent) and is engaged in a temporary and defined period of mentored advanced training to enhance the professional skills and research independence needed to pursue his or her chosen career path." The Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Personnel has recently prepared a fact sheet on postdocs at the UW. It provides a very informative profile of research associates, senior fellows, research associate trainees and senior fellow trainees on our three campuses. The link to the sheet is http://www.washington.edu/provost/ap/postdoc_facts0607.pdf.A survey of UW postdocs was conducted during the winter quarter in 2007.
