Anchorage, Alaska - Peds 661 P

Introduction

The general pediatric clerkship in Anchorage introduces students to the principles of managing pediatric patients in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. The student sees patients with the teaching faculty in the Children's Hospital of Providence and in private practice setting allowing a variety of inpatient and outpatient experiences. These clinics include:
  • The Children's Clinic
  • The Anchorage Pediatric Group
  • La Touche Pediatrics

Care of hospitalized children as well as the care of newborns will occur in the Providence Alaska Medical Center-Children's Hospital at Providence. The pediatric floor has 32 beds, with 9 beds in the intensive care unit. A wide variety of pediatric subspecialists also consult at the hospital.

Rotation Description
The student will experience both inpatient and outpatient care of pediatric patients on a daily basis. The mornings are spent in the Children's hospital caring for inpatients and performing rounds in the newborn nursery with the teaching faculty. There are daily conferences or discussion sessions of clinical cases with the faculty. The afternoons are spent in the outpatient clinics, seeing patients with the faculty.

Student Life
There is a dedicated apartment/condo that the student shares with other WWAMI Alaska students. This is within walking distance of Providence Hospital Medical Center or the University of Alaska Anchorage Campus. The amenities include; food card, computer, printer, pager, internet and textbooks.

Transportation
Dedicated automobile available.

Activities and Sites of Local Interest
Rotation is in Anchorage with a population of approximately 250,000. There are many outdoor activities available year round including skiing, hiking, fishing and biking.
