3rd Year Clerkship - (Peds 665 P)

Experience with Normal Newborn Infants
UW Medical Center Newborn Nursery 5th Floor South
(598-5600)

All students will participate during the outpatient portion of their pediatric clerkship

Goal:
In depth exposure to the care of newborn infants

Objectives:
1. Demonstrate competency performing a physical examination of a normal newborn infant

2. Review common illness conditions in newborn infants

Schedule:

Day 1:
The scheduled student will report to the nursery at 8:00 am and accompany the PL1 resident(s) and attending on morning rounds. He/she will participate in the scheduled teaching session (typically from 9-10 am). The remainder of the day will be spent examining new patient admissions under the supervision of the PL1 resident. They will demonstrate how to do a complete newborn examination. The student should have one or more opportunities to practice this before the 2nd day in the nursery. The student will participate in other patient care activities as suggested by the PL1 resident.

Day 2:
The scheduled student will report to the nursery at 8:00 am and accompany the PL1 resident(s) and attending on morning rounds. They will be expected to present any patients they admitted during the previous session in the nursery (this may not happen for infants in the hospital for <24 hours or for students who have nursery sessions separated by several days). He/she will again participate in the scheduled teaching session (typically from 9-10 am) and use the remaining time examining patients in the newborn nursery. The student will perform an observed physical examination of a newborn infant for the attending or senior resident during this session. Have the observer fill out the PE observation checklist included in your orientation materials.
