The Pulmonary
Function Laboratory at Seattle Children’s Hospital is a full-service pediatric
lung function testing facility. The lab offers the following tests: pre-
and post-bronchodilator spirometry, exercise-induced bronchospasm evaluation,
plethysmography, diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide, hypoxic
challenge (to assess the need for oxygen during airplane travel), and
maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures (measures of diaphragmatic
strength), airways resistance measurements with the Rint device, and exhaled
nitric oxide measurements.
Since 2003, we have offered infant lung function testing under sedation
for children 4 months to 3 years of age. Tests currently under development
or evaluation include methacholine challenge and measures of airway resistance
with the forced oscillation technique.
