While children are recognized as vulnerable to certain toxins, the availability of specialized expertise for the recognition, diagnosis and treatment of affected children has been limited. The Northwest Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (PEHSU) at University of Washington has assembled a team of experts including pediatricians, emergency medicine physicians, toxicologists, and other environmental health specialists to provide health care providers, government officials, educators, and families with telephone consultation on health risks associated with environmental exposures. In addition, these experts are available to train health care providers and others, and can provide pediatric clinical services on a case-by-case basis at the University of Washington Pediatric Clinic and at Harborview Medical Center.

Northwest PEHSU is one of 12 units in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. PEHSU is funded by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) through the Association of Occupational and Environmental Clinics (AOEC).

NW PEHSU is based in the UW Occupational and Environmental Health Program at Harborview Medical Center.
