Catherine Karr, MD, PhD
Director

Catherine Karr is a board certified pediatrician with a doctoral degree in epidemiology. Her research involves a large study of the impact of ambient air pollution on infant respiratory health. She is an Assistant Professor with the University of Washington Department of Pediatrics and sees patients at the UW Pediatric Clinic at Roosevelt. She also has an adjunct appointment in the School of Public Health's Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences. As Director of the NW PEHSU, Dr. Karr sets the direction of the Unit and responds to queries from health care providers, government officials, and families regarding health risks associated with environmental exposures.

Sheela Sathyanarayana, MD, MPH

Sheela Sathyanarayana is an Acting Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Harborview Medical Center and sees patients at the Harborview Children and Teens Clinic. She completed a fellowship in Pediatric Environmental Health and earned her MPH from the UW School of Public Health. Dr. Sathyanarayana's research focuses on the effects of prenatal and early childhood exposures to environmental chemicals, such as phthalates and bisphenol A, and she has a special interest in human risk, public health, and policy. In 2007 she was one of the first ten outstanding scientists chosen as Science Communication Fellows, sponsored by the non-profit publishers of Environmental Health News to assist in identifying important new research findings about environment and health and promoting them to a broader public audience. Dr. Sathyanarayana responds to PEHSU requests for consultations and presentations. She has worked with the NW PEHSU since 2005.

Nancy Beaudet, MS, CIH

Nancy Beaudet is a certified industrial hygienist. She conducts patient related work site investigations, as well as communicates with consultants, regulators and others to ensure physicians have the best exposure information possible for patient care. She also provides leadership on research projects, including hazards in the fishing industry as well as on children's environmental health concerns. She has extensive experience conducting compliance inspections for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries. Her ability to effectively integrate industrial hygiene concepts into the clinical, research and teaching missions of the program make her an important asset to the Pediatric Specialty Unit.

Michelle Sommargren, PhD, MPH

NW PEHSU Research Coordinator Michelle Sommargren earned a PhD in Neurobiology and an MPH in Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, both from the University of Washington. She developed our online CME training module "Organophosphate Pesticides and Child Health: A Primer For Healthcare Providers" and is working on a variety of new projects aimed at bringing PEHSU services to a larger audience of public health practitioners. She recently presented on pesticides at the provider training course "Out of Harm's Way: Preventing Toxic Threats to Children's Health and Development" hosted by Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility.

Joel Kaufman, MD, MPH

Joel Kaufman is the Director of the UW's Occupational and Environmental Medicine Program, and an Associate Professor with the Departments of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, Medicine, and Epidemiology. He is board certified in occupational medicine and internal medicine, and is an attending physician in the UW Occupational and Environmental Medicine Clinic and the UW General Internal Medicine Clinic (at Harborview Medical Center). He has a research interest in respiratory and cardiovascular effects of environmental exposures.

Thomas G. Martin, MD, MPH

Thomas G. Martin is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Associate Medical Director of the Washington Poison Center. He also serves as Director of the UW Medical Toxicology Service (UTOX) and the UW Medical Toxicology Consult Service (UW-TOX). In addition to board certification in medical toxicology and occupational medicine, he earned an MPH in Occupational and Environmental Health. He is an attending physician in the Emergency Department at UW Medical Center and at the UW/Harborview Medical Center Occupational and Environmental Medicine Clinic. He is the coordinator of the ACMT (American College of Medical Toxicology)/ATSDR (Agency for Toxics Substances and Disease Registry) consulting network, and he oversees toxicology training of Emergency Medicine Residents from the joint Madigan Army Hospital - University of Washington ACGME-sanctioned training program. His expertise makes him ideally suited to provide diagnosis and treatment to children exposed to environmental toxins.

Tom Burbacher, PhD

Thomas M. Burbacher, PhD is an Associate Professor with the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences. He is the Deputy Director of the Child Health Center and Director of the Community Outreach and Education Program for the Center for Ecogenetics and Environmental Health and the Superfund Basic Research Program. He is also an Affiliate of the Center on Human Development and Disability. His research is in the area of Children's Environmental Health. He currently teaches a course in Children's Environmental Health for MS, MPH and Medical students and coordinates some of the outreach activities for PEHSU.

William O. Robertson, MD

William Robertson is a Professor of Pediatrics and is the former Medical Director of the Washington Poison Center. He continues to serve on the WAPC Board. Dr. Robertson is a nationally recognized expert on childhood poisoning, has authored the sections on poisoning for the "Merck Manual", Cecil's "Textbook of Medicine" and Dreisback's "Handbook of Poisons", and has been instrumental in making the Washington Poison Center a model program.

Rebecca Birdsong, BS

Rebecca Birdsong is the Program Coordinator for the UW Occupational & Environmental Medicine Program. She assists NW PEHSU in tracking consults and cases, coordinates clinical consults, and provides other administrative support to the NW PEHSU team.
